Perfumes, colognes, and scented oils have been part of human civilization since the time of the ancient Egyptians and beyond. Perfume was used to attempt to mask or enhance a person's own odor, the result of which (hopefully) emulates one of nature's pleasant smells. All people identify and relate to their world through the phenomenon of olfaction, one of the basic senses by which humanity has learned to survive. Why do we, particularly women, love wearing fragrances? Perhaps it is the special attention one may receive while wearing a favorite fragrance. As the sense of smell can recall the most vivid of memories, perhaps it is this unique scent of a woman combined with her perfume that people tend to remember most when thinking of that person. Men will often buy the same perfume for a woman even years after she has ceased using it because it is the scent they have come to identify with that woman. Whatever the reason, fragrance continues to be an important part of our culture in modern society.

It's much more interesting to vary your perfumes with your moods, events, seasons, etc. However, determining your scent "personality" on any given day can be a challenging assignment! For some of us, it's a no-brainer; we may be a very predictable, consistent sort of "perfume persona", perhaps opting for common standards such as classic, sensuous, natural, romantic, or sporty. Others may select from a repertoire to enhance or complete a mood, or to compliment a season. Your choices of fragrance are affected by many factors, including the climate you live in, your diet, skin type, body chemistry - even your personality! Because of differences in body chemistry, temperature, and body odors, no perfume will smell exactly the same on any two people.

So what scents or families of scents best suit your personality? Are you sensual? Sporty? Shy? Romantic? Here are just a few ideas to help guide you in your choice:

Need a fragrance that fits an outdoorsy, sports-lover sort of persona?

These sorts of personalities might gravitate toward the oceanic or green olfactory family of fragrances. Fresh air in the mountain outdoors; crisp fresh linens. Not too heavy or overbearing; simple, fresh, clean. Great for casual wear and events. Must hold up to heat and perspiration!

How about a sensuous personality?

One classic choice is the oriental family of fragrances. They feature more exotic, sexier tones such as exotic flowers, mysterious musks, and stronger essences like amber, patchouli, and vanilla, to keep life exciting. These are more intense perfumes, good for special social occasions.

Energetic? Social butterfly? Love to entertain?

One might choose energizing options; spicy scents, lavender based, fresh and spicy floral, woodsy chypres. Mandarin oranges, honeysuckle, freesia. Delicious, tantalizing scents!

Feeling Romantic?

As one might imagine, soft, fresh floral scents will be the rule for this category, such as roses, violets, and lily of the valley. Understated, with soft lingering warm tones, to set a particular mood.

Need an everyday perfume?

Spicy fruity perfumes are also a good warm-weather choice, and can be a good all-round choice for the woman who wants to wear something with some traditional base-notes but is a little different to the classic floral scents.

What about different seasons?

In a warm climate where the skin perspires more, the natural skin oils and moisture amplify, thereby holding on to the perfume's fragrance - thus a lighter scent is most appropriate when perspiration and heat will be encountered. In the winter, your skin will tend to be drier, thus a heavier scent will carry more effectively on your skin in a cold environment that lacks the evaporation of moisture.

Whatever your reason for choosing a particular perfume, what is most important is that you feel good wearing it!
